What advice would you give to a creative person wanting to grow their body of work?
Experiment! Try all sorts of different practices (inside and outside of your creative niche) and see what feels best for you. Even if you think you won’t like it or be very good at it, give it a shot because you never know what may come of it. Part of the creative process is figuring out what you don’t like so that you can more clearly focus on what you do like. That being said, creating a large body of work isn’t going to happen overnight and that process will look different for everyone. I would recommend when you get a burst of creativity, use it – don’t let that opportunity escape.
What role is creativity playing in your life right now?
At this point in my life, I am learning more and more that creativity is a practice. Creative energy exists all around us in lots of different forms, so the work is figuring how to harness that energy in a way that is useful to you. For me, that means allotting time and space to be able to receive those ideas instead of trying to rush them out. Ideas are a life form of their own that are always evolving, so it’s important to give them (and yourself) the patience to grow and change!
Something that’s been beneficial for my creative process recently is to take photos of things that I find visually interesting to use as references later on. This can be literally anything - typography on an old sign, the texture on a wall, or the colors outside to create a palette with. It’s helped me become more aware and present in my daily life and also gives me a library of inspiration to work with when I need a pick-me-up.
